Board Meeting Notes

December 20, 2007

 

Mrs. Sue Helms, President, called the meeting of the City of Madison Board of Education to order at 5:05 P.M. in the board room at Teacher Resource Center and Central Office. 

 

Mrs. Elizabeth Bero, teacher and sponsor for the Lego Robotics Team at Horizon Elementary School, and fifth grade students on the team presented information to the Board regarding going “Green” at our elementary schools. The students discussed different ways to conserve energy, water, and fuel.

 

Mr. Robby Parker, principal of Bob Jones High School, presented a banner to the fall sports team at Bob Jones High with the highest grade point average. The team that received the Renaissance Award was the Bob Jones High School Volleyball Team with a team average GPA of 93.7. 

 

Mr. Bobby Jackson, System Athletics Director, introduced and presented certificates, on behalf of the Board, to the Bob Jones High School Volleyball team for being named Alabama High School Athletic Association 2007 State Runner-Up in volleyball. The team finished the season with a 62-9 record.

 

Mr. Bobby Jackson also introduced and presented certificates, on behalf of the Board, to the Bob Jones High Girls and Boys Swim Team. Both teams were named Alabama High School Athletic Association 2007 State Champions. 

 

Dr. Fowler presented information received from Gude Management Group, LLC, concerning enrollment projections for the Madison City Schools to the Board and public. The demographic study indicated the school system needs to provide additional facilities for secondary students.

 

The Board approved minutes from the meeting held on December 11, 2007. The Board also approved 2008-2009 new course offerings for Bob Jones High School (English Language Learners Newcomer Orientation, English Language Learners Reading for Success, Academic Strategies, Academic Strategies II, Advance Placement Latin IV, Advance Placement Psychology, Engineering Tier 2, Algebra II w/out Trigonometry), granting the superintendent permission to enter into a professional agreement with the law firm of Bishop, Colvin, Johnson and Kent, LLP for legal assistance regarding the Limestone Funding Agreement, and personnel actions.

 

Dr. Fowler announced that Mrs. Judy Brown, former teacher at Bob Jones High School, was named National Career Technical Teacher of the Year; Mr. Darryl Sweet, teacher at Bob Jones high School, was won the AgriScience Turn Key Award; Bob Jones High School Choir was asked to perform at the University of Alabama; and Mrs. Cindy Davis, counselor at Rainbow and Columbia, was named as one of the top ten counselors in the nation.
