Board Meeting Notes
April 26, 2007
Mrs. Melissa Hughey, art instructor at Bob Jones High School, and Mrs. Sue Helms, presented certificates, on behalf of the Board, to art students for their outstanding accomplishments in visual arts. Several students won various competitions and scholarships to major universities.
Mrs. Elizabeth Bero, teacher at Horizon Elementary School, and Mrs. Sue Helms presented certificates, on behalf of the Board, to students that participated in and won a regional science fair competition. The students will now go on to compete at the state level.
Dr. Wendy Ricci, principal at Horizon Elementary School, and Mrs. Sue Helms presented certificates, on behalf of the Board, to students that won at the Alabama State Chess Competition.
Mr. George Sledge, volunteer with the Discovery Middle School Destination Imagination team, presented certificates, on behalf of the Board, to students from Discovery Middle and Bob Jones High schools that were Destination Imagination winners. These students will participate in the Destination Imagination Global Finals in Knoxville, TN.
Mrs. Sharon Willis, principal, and Mr. Johnny Nash, band director at Discovery Middle School, displayed trophies won by the concert band, jazz band, marching band, and color guard at a band competition in Orlando, Florida. Mrs. Sue Helms presented Mr. Nash with certificates, on behalf of the Board, for each group that participated and won at the competition.

The Board approved minutes from the meeting held on April 5, 2007. The Board also approved of the March 2007 financial statements, Academy I and II summer school programs for elementary students, the Bob Jones High School summer school program, the secondary textbook publishers for art, music, theatre and foreign language, the 2007 Bob Jones High School Patriot camps, the low responsive/responsible bid #2007-14, for computer furniture for Madison Elementary School, a dance clinic for Liberty Middle School, and personnel actions.
Dr. Fowler talked about a recent trip to San Francisco, California for the National School Boards Association Conference. Dr. Fowler stated that the Board and central office staff members presented an excellent presentation during their Distance Learning session. He also stated that there were phenomenal speakers at the conference. He then announced that the Madison City School system was chosen by Expansion Magazine as one of the top public schools in the nation. Lastly, Dr. Fowler announced that Mr. Dock Murphy, long time resident of Madison, passed away.
Mrs. Sue Helms announced that she attended Legislative meetings in Montgomery, Alabama. She also talked about legislative issues discussed during the meetings.
