Board Meeting Notes

April 5, 2007

 

Mrs. Sue Helms, President, called the meeting of the Madison City Board of Education to order at 5:00 P.M. in the board room at the Teacher Resource Center and Central Office.

 

Ms. Michele Bevis and Ms. Julie Bone, Culinary Art Instructors at Bob Jones High School, and Mrs. Sue Helms, presented certificates, on behalf of the Board, to students that won the State Culinary Art competition. The students will compete in the National FCCLA competition in Anaheim, California July 6-13, 2007.

 

Mrs. Sally Bruer, principal at Liberty Middle School, and Mrs. Sue Helms presented certificates, on behalf of the Board, to students and sponsors that participated and won a regional science fair competition. The students will now go on to compete at the state level.

 

Mrs. Sharon Willis, principal at Discovery Middle School, Dr. Wendy Ricci, principal at Horizon Elementary School, and Mrs. Sue Helms presented certificates, on behalf of the Board, to students from both schools that won at the Alabama State Chess Competition.

 

Mrs. Mary Long, Director of Instructor, presented a certificate, on behalf of the Board, to Mrs. Chelonnda Seroyer for being chosen to participate in the Toyota International Teacher Program this summer in Japan. Mrs. Seroyer was one of forty chosen out of five hundred applicants.

 

Mr. Michael Weaver, Executive Director of Business and Finance, presented information to the Board and public concerning purchasing cards for the directors and Board.

 

The Board approved minutes from the meeting held on March 15, 2007. The Board also approved of the Discovery Middle School volleyball skills clinic to be held on April 23-25, 2007; Discovery Middle School band camp to be held June 18-21, July 9-12, and July 18 -21, 2007, Early Childhood/Elementary Special Needs 2007 Summer School Program Middle and High School Developmental Summer School Program, Level III – Latin course for Bob Jones High School, the low responsive/responsible bid #2007-04, for bus maintenance from Laidlaw , to employ the Education Group of Alabama, LLC to assist the Board in developing a strategic plan for the school system, and personnel actions. Dr. Fowler presented the reference manual, Serving Students with Disabilities Under Section 504, for the Board to review for second time.

 

Dr. Fowler presented statistical data on the school system’s projected growth for the next school year. He also disclosed locations chosen for portable classrooms and the number of teacher units predicted at each school.

 

Mrs. Julie Mills announced that she would not seek a new term on the school board. She stated that she has enjoyed her seven years and would like to pursue other areas of interest with children.
