Board Meeting Notes

October 5, 2006

Mrs. Sue Helms, president, called the meeting of the Madison City Board of Education to order at 5:10 P.M. in the board room at the Teacher Resource Center and Central Office.

Ms. Maria Kilgore, Director of Special Education, introduced administrative staff for the 2006 Special Needs Summer School Program. Administrators presented PowerPoints with pictures of summer school activities for the participants. All administrators thanked the central office staff and Board for supporting the summer school program. 

Mrs. Kilgore also presented a certificate to a representative from Teledyne Brown Engineering, Inc, for their financial support of the developmental delayed summer program.

Mrs. Mary Long, Director of Instruction, introduced members of the Madison Arts Council. The Council members presented checks to each school in the District to support their arts program. 

The Board approved minutes from the meeting held on September 21, 2006. The Board also approved distributing 20% of the At-Risk Funds to two non-profit agencies, Big Brothers/Big Sisters and the Mental Health Association, change order #3 for the cafeteria addition at Discovery Middle School for a decreased amount of $36,119.19, Pearson Digital Learning Software for the elementary schools, Mrs. Teresa Hill as Acting Chief School Financial Officer and personnel actions.

Dr. Nowlin also presented a National Board Certified Teacher PEPE Waiver Policy for a first reading.

Mrs. Sue Helms announced that at the next session Legislators may review two issues; fixed start time calendar and Amendment #2. 

Mrs. Helms also gave an update on the superintendent search. She stated that to date Dr. Hatch has received ten applications for the position of superintendent. The next school board meeting was scheduled for November 1, 2006.

The next Board meeting was scheduled for November 1, 2006 at 5:00 P.M at the Teacher Resource Center.
