Board Meeting Notes
June 8, 2006
Mrs. Sue Helms, president, called the meeting of the Madison City Board of Education to order at 5:10 P.M. in the board room at the Teacher Resource Center and Central Office.
Mrs. Janet Stratman, Parent Teacher Association (P.T.A.) president for Madison Elementary School, presented and discussed information with the Board and public concerning three canopies they would like to place on the playground at Madison Elementary School. The canopies will cost the P.T.A. around $12,000, and are warranted for ten years.
Dr. Nowlin announced and extended congratulations to Chef Judy Brown, culinary arts instructor at Bob Jones High School, for being named Alabama Family and Consumer Science Teacher of the Year by the Alabama Association for Career Technical; and Mrs. Chelonnda Seroyer, English teacher at Bob Jones High School, for presenting and being filmed in Dr. Harry Wong’s new video series, “More on the Effective Teacher.”
Dr. Nowlin also called upon Dr. Clara Toney, resource specialist in the Instruction Department, to present writing assessment scores for fifth, seventh, and tenth grade students. Dr. Toney explained that Madison City students scored well above the national average. She commended teachers and administrators for a job well-done.
The Board approved minutes from meetings held on May 25, 2006, and June 1, 2006. The Board also approved an agreement with the City of Madison for School Resource Officers for 180 days and training for the officers, amending policy JAJ: Student Code of Conduct, the third year of a pupil transportation contract with Laidlaw Transit, Inc., and personnel actions.
