Board Meeting Notes
April 20, 2006
Mrs. Sue Helms, president, called the meeting of the Madison City Board of Education to order at 5:00 P.M. in the boardroom at the Teacher Resource Center and Central Office.
Mrs. Judy Brown, Culinary Arts instructor at Bob Jones High School, presented certificates, on behalf of the board, to culinary arts students that won first place for the second year at the Alabama State Culinary Arts Competition. The teamís next culinary competition will be held in Nashville, Tennessee.
Mrs. Brown also presented a certificate, from the Board, to a student that won the State Family, Careers, and Community Leaders of America Hospitality Competition.
Mrs. Raquel Spiegel, teacher at Bob Jones High School, presented a certificate on behalf of the Board to a student that won second place with the AAA National Traffic Safety Poster Contest. The studentís work will be published in a calendar.
Mrs. Robin Dauma, teacher at Discovery Middle School, presented certificates on behalf of the Board to Destination Imagination students that won the Destination Imagination State Championship. The students will compete at Destination Imagination Global Finals in Knoxville, Tennessee.
Mrs. Theresia Mullen, interim principal at Horizon Elementary, introduced Mrs. Carolyn Bero, teacher at Horizon. Mrs. Bero presented a certificate to a Horizon Elementary student for her extraordinary academic achievements in areas of spelling, reading, math and science.
The school board approved minutes from the meeting held on March 16, 2006, Leadership Alabama professional development for Mrs. Sue Helms, amending the 2006 Ė 2007 Madison City School Year Calendar to include five additional instructional days, rejecting the bid for the Bob Jones High School football field house addition, taken on April 4, 2006, amending the 2005-2006 Capital Plan to include the Bob Jones High School field house addition, the 2006-2007 Capital Plan Committee, Bid #2006-02, for Interactive Whiteboards, Bid #2006-03A,and Bid #2006-03B, both for Imaging and Patch Management, Bid #2006-04, Wireless Maintenance Solutions, Bid #2006-05, Small Wares, Bid #2006-06, Self Contained Forty Gallon Tilting Kettle, February 2006 Financial Statements, and personnel actions.
Dr. Clark presented the following policy for a first reading: GBRGA: Supplemental Income for School Employees. The board asked Mr. Sanderson to review the policy before it is approved.
Dr. Clark also presented policy GBRIB: Sick Leave Bank for a first reading to amend.
Dr. Clark announced that his retirement would be effective June 1, 2006. Mr. Woody Sanderson and the audience applauded Dr. Clark for his contributions to the school system.
After conducting the expulsion hearing in executive session, the Board resolved the student discipline matter by approving the superintendentís recommendation.
A work session was scheduled for May 2, 2006, to discuss the Boardís search for a new superintendent to replace Dr. Clark.
